Farmer Producer Company (FPC) Registration
Over 14 crore farmers contribute close to 18% of India's GDP, and most of them face the same structural problem — low individual bargaining power, fragmented market access, and no easy route to institutional finance. A Farmer Producer Company (FPC), governed by Part IXA (Sections 378A–378ZT) of the Companies Act, 2013, is the government's answer: a corporate structure built specifically for primary producers to pool resources, share risk, and access markets and finance collectively, without giving up the democratic "one member, one vote" governance that a cooperative depends on.
What an FPC can actually do
An FPC's objects under Section 378C aren't limited to selling crops. They cover production, harvesting, grading, and pooling; processing and value addition (packaging, preservation); import of inputs and equipment for members; power generation and infrastructure in a rural context; crop insurance and risk mitigation; and farmer training and capacity building. In practice, this means an FPC can be structured around whichever part of the value chain the member farmers actually need help with — not just aggregating and selling raw produce.
Why the structure matters
Unlike a private limited company, voting isn't proportional to shareholding — it stays one member, one vote, regardless of how much capital any individual member has contributed. That keeps control with the farmers themselves, which is exactly what makes FPCs eligible for the government schemes and institutional credit lines built specifically for this structure — schemes an informal farmer group or an ordinary private company doesn't qualify for.
